Authoritative Leadership

Does your boss’s action reflect the phrase ‘Do As I Say’ quite often? Then, chances are that he likes to follow the authoritative style. In this, the leader believes in showing his authority to his subordinates to get the work done.

The plus point of this is that the subordinates will get the work done by hook or by crook. On the other hand, the drawback is that these are the leaders whom people bitch about the most.

Pacesetting Leadership

If your boss says, ‘Do as I do.’ then he believes in pacesetting style. In this style, the leader sets a target for his subordinates and sets a pace for the workflow.

These leaders are always an inspiration for their subordinates. They help them work with optimum utilization of their efficiency. However, there is a risk that the subordinates might lose their individuality

Democratic Leadership

These leaders usually ask their subordinates a question i.e., ‘What do you think?’ This indicates that the leader is interested in taking everyone’s suggestions. Thus, it sends out a message that everyone’s opinion will be valued in the decision-making process.

It is one of the best leadership styles. However, the problem with this style is that the decision might turn out to be a wrong one if proper filtering of the ideas, suggestions, and opinions are not done.

Coaching Leadership

If your boss is always up with suggestions saying, ‘Consider this,’ then there is a strong chance that he believes in this style. Here, the leader usually acts as a coach or a mentor to teach and guide his subordinates.

In this case, the subordinates get a lot to learn from their leaders. But, since everyone has their own pace of learning, there is a chance that it could hinder the workflow.

Affiliative Leadership

If your boss holds the opinion that ‘people come first,’ this means that he follows the affiliative style. Here the leader gives more importance to the subordinates and puts their welfare first.

This brings in the goodwill of the subordinates for the leaders. However, this might affect the workflow. That is because the first job of a boss is to finish the job.

Laissez-Faire Style

This is the least productive style of all leadership styles. It is also called fake leadership. Here your boss is neither interested in you nor your work. All he cares about is to finish his formality of doing his work by supervising you.

These leaders are the most harmful ones in an organization. Neither the employees nor the work show any development under this form of leadership.

Now, as you know about different leadership styles now, hope you can identify your boss’s nature. It will also help you in understanding which type of boss you want to become.
